THE CIVILIAN SOLDIER
She wears a red, white and blue hat,
follows orders dutifully with a smile,
and marches around in a parade of one.
She’s a hostess at the American Legion,
and can hold her own drinking beer
with veterans of every forgotten war.
Once a year she produces a USO Show
for all the wounded warriors who dance
with her using their prosthetic limbs
while she sings:
I left my heart at the stage door canteen,
I left it there with a girl named Eileen…
